About ICU Optometry
ICU OPTOMETRY has been thriving in Bardon since 1993, when Julie opened the practice's doors for the first time under the name Julie Newport Optometrist.
The practice changed its name to ICU OPTOMETRY in 2000, to emphasise the intensive care we offer (and also because I See You).
Andrew joined the practice in 2010 after working with Julie on a number of musical projects in the preceding years, including the Queensland Philanthropic Orchestra, which raised over $50,000 for local charities between 2007-2011 and which was principally supported by ICU Optometry.
We're proud to have been an integral part of our local community for over 30 years.
Julie Newport. Optometrist.
Julie graduated with honours from QUT's School of Optometry in 1989. After having worked in other practices for 4 years, she opened what is now ICU Optometry in October 1993. In 2005 she was the first optometrist in Queensland to qualify to write prescriptions for medicated eye drops.
Her main professional interests include dry eyes and therapeutic care of eye health problems. She’s determined to help her patients avoid vision damage from the common scourge of macular degeneration.
Julie lives locally, rips around Bardon on her little red Vespa, and plays bucketloads of piano.
Andrew Robinson. Optometrist.
Andrew became a partner at ICU in 2010 after gaining his B.App.Sc (Opt) from QUT in 2006, followed by his Grad.Dip. in Ocular Therapeutics the following year. His gentle, empathetic style is greatly valued by his patients.
His particular areas of professional interest include children’s vision, orthokeratology, and specialty contact lenses, on which topics he has spoken on several occasions at optometry conferences. He is a member of the Queensland Children's Hospital Eye Clinic's Paediatric Optometry Alignment Program, providing a direct communication link with the clinicians of the QCH Eye Clinic where necessary.
Andrew maintains an ongoing interest in educating the next generation of optometrists, acting as a clinical supervisor to final year students both at the QUT clinic and at ICU.
In a previous life Andrew was an award-winning orchestral conductor, leading the likes of the New York Ballet and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. He still waves his arms in public from time to time with the Brisbane City Pops Orchestra and Springboard Opera. He now lives south of the river with his family, indulges in all things mathematical, scientific and generally nerdy, and is a keen (though not especially fast) cyclist.
